Abstract:

Cybersecurity is one of if not the most critical areas forsecurity for countries, institutes, and people today. Cyberattacks can disable any system, putting lives in danger. This paper investigates the research and development activity in this space. Technology mining techniques including bibliometrics and patent analyses were used to zoom in on academic research and industrial development, respectively. The paper presents a framework which can be replicated for other critical areas like cybersecurity. The results indicate that US universities and industrial corporations are leading the efforts worldwide. One of the interesting results was that the smart grid was identified as an area of focus coupled with cybersecurity.
